National anthem for drunks

Postby dnkoa » Thu Jun 07, 2012 10:43 pm

Bill Press has gotten some sanctimonious bullshit from conservatives for saying he doesn't like The Star Spangled Banner. First of all, does anyone like the actual song, not whatever national pride you get while singing it, or the sense of community in singing it with a group, but the song itself. Does anyone like singing it solo? The key to understanding why it's such an insufferable song to sing formally is that it's actually a drinking song:

I'd prefer the anthem was This Land is Your Land.

I actually knew that!

I think it's cool that our Anthem is in 3/4 time, so you can waltz to it if you want. :-)

Lyrics:
To Anacreon in Heaven, where he sat in full glee,
A few Sons of Harmony sent a petition;
That he their Inspirer and Patron wou'd be;
When this answer arrived from the Jolly Old Grecian;
"Voice, Fiddle, and Flute,
No longer be mute,
I'll lend you my name and inspire you to boot,
And besides I'll instruct you like me, to intwine,
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's Vine!"

You find out what someone is really like in "battle," and Olbermann is who you want to be in a foxhole with, Patrick said. "On the air, we had each others' backs," said Olbermann.
-David Goetzl: "Keith Olbermann, Dan Patrick still brothers long after ESPN's 'Big Show'"; MediaPost blog, 4-6-2012
