DAN PATRICK AND KEITH OLBEREMANN formed a legendary SportsCenter partnership with Dan Patrick in the mid ’90s, but Olbermann left the network amid controversy in 1997, eventually landing at Fox. Olbermann is now in his third run at ESPN, and in May returned to his role as a SportsCenter host –- but the company has changed drastically since the Olbermann and Patrick days.
Dan Patrick spoke about Olbermann’s first departure from ESPN on Tuesday, and said that the job of SportsCenter host wasn’t as fun as it should have been.
“I tried to talk him out of it, because I said ‘you’ll never have this,’ but Keith decided… he was doing what was best for him.”
Do you think you guys could have gone on to be the first version of PTI, or do a radio show together if all had gone well and he stayed?
“I don’t even know if they would have let us… they didn’t want us to do anything outside of SportsCenter. They wouldn’t let us do anything. There was no carte blanche. It’s not like Scott Van Pelt, ‘we’re going to give you a show, go be goofy. Have fun, do whatever you want, talk betting.’ We had handcuffs on. We were trying to get out of the handcuffs every single night for an hour, and then we’d put the handcuffs back on –- but management… it was different back then. The temperature in that building was different.
"They weren’t going ‘hey, have fun, go out there, be crazy! Have catchphrases!’ All of that. They were like ‘hey, can you guys tone it down, here?’ And I think Keith saw where it was going, that it wasn’t going to be much fun, and Keith wanted to beat them to the punch.
"My boss at the time said ‘you’re just bleeping talent.’ So this is my boss, who liked me! But the mindset was ‘you’re all interchangeable here.’ And that proved to be true. Now they’re desperate to get talent on there, but back then they thought the most important people were four letters, ESPN. And that was there business model. They got greedy and wanted to have all the money. Then they were looking around going ‘wait, nobody knows anyone on SportsCenter anymore.’ And it changed SportsCenter.”
