Died at age 104. He was born in Guyana, and later became an author of several short stories and novels and also was a diplomat at the United Nations. But he is best known for his first book, published in 1959, To Sir, With Love, which was later adapted into the 1967 movie of the same name starring Sidney Poitier. The book and movie was based on his Braithwaite's experiences as a teacher in the tough section of the East End in London, U.K.
However, Braithwaite thought the movie version was too sentimental and downplayed the interracial romance that was in his novel.
